Livestock Intensification Project (ISLA)

The Livestock Intensification Project-South Western Mau, Kenya is part project is part of IDH’s Initiative for Sustainable Landscapes (ISLA) Kenya, which aims to restore and conserve 60,000 hectares of the Mau forest by 2030. The Mau Forest Complex covers an area of over 400,000 ha and is ecologically and economically critical for Kenya and parts of East Africa. More than 10 million people depend on its rivers. The forest also influences the region’s micro-climate such as rainfall patterns, creating ideal conditions to produce crops such as tea.

About ISLA II and ISLA III

IDH in partnership with SNV have been implementing a livestock intensification project aimed at developing innovative models to
work with forest- dependent communities along the South West Mau, to increase their income while reducing deforestation. The
model focuses on demonstrating livestock intensification as a way of increasing production from dairy enterprise, improving their
livelihoods through increased income and providing a sustainable solution to monitor and control livestock overgrazing in the forest
since by intensification, the community members reduce their herds and graze these at home as opposed to grazing in the forest.
Beyond the dairy cattle that will be addressed through dairy intensification, non-milking livestock form part of the livestock
grazing in the forest. These include the male young stock, steers, bulls and non-milking dairy cows.

ISLA III Promoting these practices through 25 demonstration farms (15 new and10 already established during the pilot phase, in the same area). At each
demonstration farm, 40 community members will be receiving training
and therefore the project’s 1,000 target farmers will require 25 demonstration farms. The project will also consider using some of the
pilot study group members as demo farms subject to suitable location and adoption
